Linking Geoheritage and Traditional Architecture for Mitigating Depopulation in Rural Areas: the Palaeozoic Villages Route (Courel Mountains UNESCO Global Geopark, Spain)

Abstract The use of stone in traditional architecture represents one the most relevant links between geological and cultural heritage. As a topic general interest easily understandable to all public, this link is guiding thread for touristic routes mitigating depopulation trend that affects large inland rural areas, including many areas UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGp). In northwest Spain, Courel Mountains UGGp created Palaeozoic Villages Route purposes 2018, highlighting relevance local stones as key feature sustainable development. For design creation route, seven villages were selected along six criteria: (1) representativeness building with bedrock UGGp, (2) preserved architecture, (3) their geoheritage, (4) scenic beauty surroundings, (5) potential combination other activities, (6) presence services. exhibits four rock types/sections/structures spanning periods, well different uses walling roofing depending on feature. Since route experienced an increased revenue 19% sector villages, while visitors used up 61% services or more days. addition, reinforces awareness abandonment fostering purchase and/or restoration dwellings second regular residences tranquil environments. short medium term, these actions are expected reverse or, at least, minimise loss population UGGp.
